Can I fix my own light switch safely without an electrician?

You can replace a basic light switch yourself if you shut off the breaker and confirm the circuit is dead. Call an electrician if wiring is damaged, aluminum, involves the panel, or breakers trip often. In Baton Rouge and Central, use screw terminals instead of back-stab holes and match switch amperage. Consider GFCI/AFCI protection in wet areas and bedrooms.

  • Turn off breaker.
  • Verify power is off.
  • Label wires; tighten screws.
