What should I do first when a circuit breaker trips in my home?

First, turn the tripped breaker fully OFF, then back ON once. Unplug or switch off devices on that circuit before you reset.

  • Find the handle in the middle position and move it firmly OFF, then ON.
  • Reset any GFCI outlets on that circuit.
  • If it trips again or the panel feels warm, stop and call a licensed electrician.
  • We provide 24/7 emergency electrical repairs in Baton Rouge and Central.
