What causes a light switch to stop working but light stays on?

A light that stays on when the switch “stops working” usually means the switch is failed closed or the circuit is miswired so the light is fed constant power. Three-way switches can do this if the common and traveler wires are on the wrong terminals. Backstabbed connections can also fail and create odd behavior. A stuck relay in a smart switch or a shorted fixture/switch loop can bypass control. We troubleshoot wiring and switch faults in Baton Rouge and nearby areas.

Quick checks:

  • Try the other three-way switch.
  • Test with a known-good bulb.
  • Do not open the panel; call a pro.
